Many ecobly companies make their products from our waste stream -- using recycled paper, glass and metal. Some take it a step further, like using old gold, worn out sweaters and tossed fur coats!
Everything we use can be repurposed or "upcycled" in some way. And these manufacturers are wringing every possible use out of our dumped stuff. But it won't help, if we don't buy it.
Recycling saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas pollution. According to an Environmental Protection Agency report, "Plastics recovery, in addition to increased diversion from disposal, results in significant energy savings (an estimated 50-75 MBtu/ton of material recycled) compared with the production of virgin materials. Reducing energy use, in turn, leads to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions due to avoided fuel use."
Household recycling is up around the country, but has a long way to go. The biggest driver of making recycled products is buying them. And that's where you come in!
New York Times Green Inc. recently reported that the recycling market is down, and that's bad news for the planet and the businesses that rely on this market. While they didn't cite a cause, surely increased consumer demand can help rectify this problem.
